A momentus event happened two Mondays ago. We've had our very first automated elections. I admit that I was nervous about the whole automated thing. One of my fears was that my votes would not be counted. Another was the machines would not work or there'd be a blackout and failure of elections would be declared. Those things did not materialize.
However, I am still disappointed. Why? Lesser evil won. The greater good lost. I am not feeling particularly hopeful right now. Although I am trying to stay positive. I just can't believe that there are still millions of Filipinos who are blinded by the glitz and glamour of show business. Who still vote based on the candidate's last name. The hell with credentials. Vote of the sikat. Although there are a lot of showbiz personalities who lost, a lot of showbiz trapos won in the Senate. Or in Congress.
I thought we wanted change. But the candidates that I saw winning are the same old people we criticize on television while they conduct Senate inquiries. Seriously?!
I thought we wanted change, but I have heard people voting for the 'lesser evil' rather than the 'greater good' because the 'greater good' has a slim chance in winning.
I thought we wanted change, but the most unpopular president of the republic has just been declared as Congresswoman-elect in her district. And I even heard that it was a landslide victory. Unpopular indeed.
As I've read in the Twitter, there's no failure of elections. There is, however, a failure of intelligence.
